A disability rights protest is set to take place at the Artificial Beach today amid allegations of government neglect towards disabled people.
The silent protest is scheduled to continue from 4:30 pm to 06:00 pm.
A petition has also been submitted to the People's Majlis accusing the government of neglecting to provide disabled people with protection and financial assistance as required by law. The petition also highlights challenges in getting medical care.
The petition, signed by a total of 46 guardians, asked parliament to investigate why the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has failed to provide financial assistance and special protection to people with disabilities.
The petition states that due to the failure to address the issues, some of the children in need of treatment have regressed and their general condition has deteriorated, causing irreparable psychological and physical damage.
Opposition MP Mohamed Ibrahim moved a motion in parliament on Tuesday to bring the matter to the government's attention. However, the ruling party used its supermajority to reject the motion.
