The government has held discussions with a senior delegation from the popular social media platform TikTok to allow monetization in the Maldives.

The meeting was held at the Economic Ministry on Monday.

TikTok allows users to generate revenue for each post in proportion to the number of their followers.

Users must open a TikTok Creator Marketplace account for monetization.

A marketplace account can be opened if users have at least 10,000 followers and their videos have received more than 100,000 views in the past 30 days.

TikTok revenue estimates

  • 10,000 followers - USD 5 to 10 per post
  • 10,000- 100,000 followers - USD 60 to 90 per post
  • 100,000 - 500,000 followers - USD 200 to 500 per post
  • 500,000 - 1,000,000 followers - USD 400 to 600 per post
  • More than 1,000,000 followers - USD 750 to 1,000 per post and more

The government earlier held talks with the Chinese government to find ways to allow monetization of TikTok in the Maldives.
