Some Maldivian families who were repatriated from Syrian refugee camps have been released from the National Reintegration Center.
Adhadhu understands that some of the families were released during the fasting month of Ramadan. At least two more families remain in the centre.
Three people were initially brought to the center in Kaafu Himmafushi island in 2022. They have now been released after completing the rehabilitation programme.
In January 2024, 21 women and children were brought back to the Maldives. They were among the families released last Ramadan.
Many Maldivians migrated to join the Islamic State (IS) group that was fighting in Syria and Iraq, with some agencies estimating the figure at 200.
Most of them joined the IS, but some of them became members of the Nusra Front as well.
Some Maldivians are still involved in the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime.
