The government-controlled parliament has rejected an emergency motion calling on authorities to find an immediate solution to the power outage problem in Addu city.
The motion was proposed by Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The motion expressed concern as the power outage problem in Addu has persisted for more than a year and called on the authorities to find an immediate solution.
It was rejected by 47 votes from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MPs. Thirteen MPs, including PNC's Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan, voted in favour.
The state-owned electricity company Fenaka said earlier that the electricity problem in Addu would be resolved for Ramadan.
On February 17, Fenaka said a 1.8 MW generator set is being delivered under an agreement with State Electric Company (STELCO) while damaged generators were also being fixed.
However, the electricity problem has not been resolved, and residents of Addu and their MPs have now started staging protests.
Addu, the second most populous city in the Maldives, has been facing frequent power outages since early last year. The government has given various deadlines to resolve the issue.
