President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's member Yazmeed Mohamed chairs the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) investigative committee to look into the conduct of two Supreme Court justices, Adhadhu has learnt.
The three-member committee comprises Yazmeed, Civil Service Commission (CSC) President Mohamed Nasih and lawyers' member Ali Abdul Latheef.
Yazmeed was appointed to the committee after Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham resigned following criticism.
The JSC is investigating two disciplinary cases against Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir.
They are accused of influencing Criminal Court judges to release Azmiralda's husband, who was arrested during a police raid at a spa.
Azmiralda is also accused of being present during a meeting where Justice Husnu Suood, who resigned recently, summoned a High Court employee to the Supreme Court and used “offensive language”.
Suood, Azmiralda and Mahaz were suspended after the JSC received a letter from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) about a criminal investigation shortly before a hearing on a constitutional case on MP disqualification.
JSC can no longer conduct disciplinary proceedings against Suood since he resigned after alleging that President Muizzu and AG Usham were intimidating judges and influencing the constitutional case.
Mahaz was summoned to the investigative committee on Sunday. Azmiralda's hearing, also scheduled for Sunday, was later postponed. The JSC has not announced a new time for her hearing.
Yazmeed, who chairs the committee, has no legal experience. He previously worked as an accountant and was appointed to the JSC on February 23, just three days before the disciplinary proceedings against the judges were initiated.
He contested for Villingili constituency during the parliamentary elections in 2024.
