President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ordered the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to hand over the ferry terminals developed in more than 40 islands under the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) project to the island councils.
Speaking in Haa Alif Molhadhoo island during his visit to the atoll, Muizzu said MTCC had not started operating the ferry terminals and that could cause the facilities to become derelict.
"Now I have told MTCC. Instead of leaving these ferry terminals in the 46 islands to become derelict, they must hand over the terminals to the councils," he said.
He added that this will be done before the end of February.
Under the RTL project, which was launched by the former government with the aim of strengthening the transport system, high-speed ferry services are now provided in the southern and northern atolls of the country.
Earlier this month, Muizzu announced that RTL services would be established in all the atolls before the end of the year.
