The Finance Ministry records have shown that the MVR 2 billion forecast as revenue from resort rent was not reached at the end of last year.
According to the latest weekly fiscal developments report, revenue from resort rent stood at MVR 1.8 billion, MVR 127 million less than the forecast, at the end of the year.
Since resort rent must be paid in dollars, the government received USD 123 million last year as revenue from resort rent.
Although the revenue was less than the forecast, the total amount was higher compared to the previous year.
In 2023, revenue from resort rent was USD 115 million or MVR 1.7 billion.
Some resorts have not paid rent for years. Previous governments have tried to solve this problem without any progress.
Resort rents and penalties for non-payment of rent account for the largest share of the state's unreceived revenue.
Figures shared by Deputy Speaker Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim last year showed that out of the MVR 15.4 billion owed to the state, MVR 6.9 billion was due as rent and CSR.
