The Prosecutor General's (PG) office has cancelled the immunity agreements with four people charged in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
According to the PG office, immunity agreements were cancelled for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, Mohamed Allam Latheef, Mohamed Hussain and Ahmed Ishfah Ali.
The decision was made by PG Abbas Shareef. The immunity agreement with a fifth suspect, ex-MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath, was cancelled in August 2022 by former PG Hussain Shameem.
The immunity agreements were reached with them to continue the investigation into the corruption and to recover the lost money.
"However, the investigating agencies have informed that these people are not cooperating with the investigation and for the recovery of the lost money," the PG office stated as the reason for cancelling the agreements.
The PG office has asked the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to complete the investigation into the pending cases against them and submit them to the PG office as soon as possible.
Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in jail after being convicted of embezzling more than MVR 2 billion from the MMPRC during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen.
He reached a plea deal and served only three years and one month. He was granted a presidential pardon by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in 2023.
