The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that legal action will be taken against those who feed rays in the Maldives.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the EPA said studies have shown that feeding rays alter their natural foraging habits.
"Furthermore, these practices increase the risk of dangerous incidents, due to the attraction of sharks to areas where rays are fed," the EPA stated.
The EPA further said such incidents have led to negative perceptions regarding the safety of tourism activities and the management of marine resources.
"It is essential that all interactions with protected species be conducted in a manner that prioritizes human safety, sustainability, and the preservation of the environment," the agency said.
The EPA called on all stakeholders to immediately cease any activities that contravene the Protected Species Regulation which protects all species of rays and skates in Maldivian territory.
