The Civil Court has ordered former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to pay MVR 1 million out of the MVR 2 million fine imposed on him in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.

On Tuesday, the Civil Court ordered Adeeb to pay MVR 1 million to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within one month.

Adeeb was fined MVR 1 million each on two charges related to the MMPRC scandal. On a ruling delivered on October 5, 2020, he was given one month to pay the total amount.

However, the Attorney General's (AG) Office filed a case in the Civil Court in May 2023 after he failed to pay MVR 1 million out of the MVR 2 million fine.

Adeeb requested the opportunity to pay MVR 100,000 as a commitment and pay MVR 20,000 each month until the fine was fully paid.

But the state wanted him to pay MVR 200,000 as a commitment and pay the rest within 36 months.

Adeeb was given the opportunity to submit a written request. However, the state later asked the court to make a ruling without further hearings.
