"Burunu Boma"; biggest sports fishing tournament in Maldives launched

Male' Maldives: The Visit Maldives Club (VMC) has officially launched "Burunu Boma", the largest sports fishing tournament in the Maldives.

The event was inaugurated on December 20, 2024, with a ceremony at the Malé Table Tennis Hall, and was graced by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, as the chief guest.

Minister Shiyam emphasized the pivotal role of the sports fishing community in the Maldives, calling Burunu Boma the country’s largest tournament of its kind. He also revealed that the event will be held at the Crossroads Marina, marking the first time the location will host such an event.

The Minister expressed confidence that this tournament would not only enhance tourism but also attract a larger number of sports fishing enthusiasts to the Maldives.

This launch is a significant milestone in advancing sports tourism in the Maldives while reinforcing the country's dedication to sustainable fishing practices. Scheduled to take place between April and May 2025, the Burunu Boma tournament aims to draw international fishing enthusiasts, alongside participants from the Maldivian tourism industry.

“This is just the beginning,” said Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

He outlined a broader vision to diversify Maldivian tourism, stating, “With multiple events leading up to it, Burunu Boma will become a flagship international sports fishing festival. We aim to establish the Maldives as a premier destination for sports fishing on the global tourism calendar,” Shiuree added.

The Burunu Boma tournament will also prioritize sustainability by emphasizing the catch and release method to protect the Maldives’ marine environment. This commitment aligns with the Maldives’ overarching tourism strategy, which has placed a strong focus on environmental protection from the very start.

In addition, the event featured the unveiling of the Burunu Boma microsite and the winner’s digital shield, marking the official launch of the tournament's online presence.
