Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Asif has been suspended for allegedly embezzling funds from the Maldives Corrections.
He was accused of stealing more than MVR 200,000 from the budget of the Prisons Club and transferring the money to various accounts.
Asif, the President of the Prisons Club which conducts activities related to staff, was accused in July.
Corrections media officer confirmed to Adhadhu that Asif had been suspended starting Thursday, but declined to provide details.
Meanwhile, 35 Corrections officers have petitioned the Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer to expedite the investigation. In response, Zareer said the matter was being investigated.
However, the petitioners alleged that the Corrections authorities were trying to cover up the case as the investigation was taking a lot of time.
