Parliament committee looks into no confidence motions against members of independent institutions

No-confidence motions have been submitted against Civil Service Commission (CSC) President Mohamed Naasih, Elections Commission (EC) members Ali Nashaath and Mohamed Asif and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) member Thoha Mohamed.

The motions were submitted to the Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions at a time when the ruling party was working to amend laws in a way that allowed the President to influence the ACC and EC.

It is unclear who submitted the no-confidence motions to the Independent Institutions Committee on Wednesday. The committee decided this was a "sensitive" issue and conducted that part of the meeting in secret.

Before deciding to continue the meeting behind closed doors, MPs mentioned that the committee had received letters regarding the members of the commissions.

All four were appointed to the institutions during the previous government and when the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had a supermajority in the Parliament.

Naasih was appointed to the CSC on September 3, 2020. Nashaath was appointed to the EC for a second term on November 16, 2023. Asif was appointed on September 6, 2021 and Thoha was appointed to the ACC on March 17, 2022.
