The Parliament has today approved the former Ambassador to China Aishath Azeema as the new Ambassador to India.
During today's Parliament sitting, 79 MPs voted in favour of appointing Azeema as the new Ambassador to India. No MPs voted against the appointment.
Maldives' current ambassador to India is Ibrahim Shaheeb. However, he is being transferred as his term as ambassador is about to expire.
Shaheeb was appointed as the Indian Ambassador in November 2022, but his term is counted including his previous tenure as Singapore's ambassador.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu proposed Azeema as the new Ambassador and sent the matter to Parliament for approval on July 15.
The matter was sent to the Committee on Foreign Relations on October 14. The committee unanimously decided that she was a suitable candidate for the post.
Azeema has previously served as First Secretary and Minister Counselor of the High Commission of Maldives in India.
She has also served as Additional Secretary, Director and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
