Area to be reclaimed.

Area to be reclaimed.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to reclaim the lagoon next to the area allocated for the development of a water theme park in the east of Hulhumale'.

Although the HDC has not officially announced this, reliable sources told Adhadhu that the proposal has been submitted and discussed at the board level. The project will be officially announced soon, sources said.

When contacted, the HDC's information officer responded with a message that he cannot not answer calls at the time. Adhadhu requested a comment via message but had not received a response at the time of publishing.

The land use plan on the HDC website does not show any reclamation near the planned water theme park area. HDC has previously said that its master plan is also the land use plan. So it is also not part of the master plan to reclaim the area.

Sources said the reclaimed area can be used in two ways. One option is to develop it as a tourism zone with small guesthouses and hotels and the second option is to allocate land in the area to real estate companies to build high-rise towers. But the board has not yet decided on this.

Meanwhile, the water theme park project has not progressed and the former management of HDC cancelled the agreement with the contractor. HDC also informed Water Front and Leisure Pvt Ltd to hand over the land plot.

The Civil Court issued an order in support of the HDC's decision but the High Court quashed the order. HDC appealed the order at the Supreme Court, which quashed the High Court order. However, it could not be confirmed whether the land had been handed over to HDC as the company was unavailable for comment.
