A ruling party lawmaker has criticized the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on social media a week after MPs argued about corruption in state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
In a post on X, Hulhumale' Uthuru MP Hussain Shareef shared a screenshot of a complaint in a WhatsApp group about areas without street lighting in Hulhumale' Phase Two.
"What service is the top-heavy HDC providing to the people?" MP Hussain questioned.
Social media users who commented on the post also criticized HDC. They said such a post from a ruling party MP proves the failure of HDC.
One social media user called on MP Hussain to summon HDC's Managing Director Fazul Rasheed to the Parliament's SOE Committee.
Meanwhile, Fazul responded to the criticism by blaming the unlit streets on stolen electric cables.
In a series of posts on X, Fazul said an order has been placed to acquire equipment needed to light up the Vinares area in Hulhumale' Phase Two.
"The electricity grid for the street lights has been completed by August and the cables attached to the street lights have been missing," he added.
This comes amid a heated exchange in a WhatsApp group of ruling party lawmakers over corruption in SOEs including HDC.
