President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who openly supports Israel's genocide in Gaza, during his ongoing visit to New York.
Muizzu is in New York to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and a Special Session of the UN Security Council. According to the information publicized by the President's Office, Muizzu met with Ursula before meeting Abbas.
Muizzu was wearing a Keffiyeh scarf during his meeting with the Palestinian President. He assured the Maldivian government's continued support towards the Palestinian cause.
"Now and even in the future, we will do everything necessary for the Palestinian people. All Maldivians stand in solidarity with Palestine," Muizzu said after the meeting.
The President's Office said Abbas thanked the government and people of Maldives for their assistance and support.

Meanwhile, the President's Office said the importance of the close relations between the Maldives and the European Union (EU) was highlighted during the meeting with Ursula.
Ursula visited Israel in October last year after Israel intensified its attacks on the Palestinian people and launched a genocide in Gaza. She announced that the EU fully backed the Israeli campaign and faced criticism from some EU officials.
The President's Office further stated that Ursula assured the EU's continued support to support Maldives in the future and praised Maldives efforts to protect itself from climate change.
