An inmate, jailed for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor, has committed suicide in the Maafushi Prison.
A government official told Adhadhu that the 62-year-old committed suicide by using a bedsheet.
"He stayed alone in that cell. He died using a bedsheet. The case is being investigated," the official said.
Adhadhu learned that the deceased was being held pending trial for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
Home Minister Ali Ihusan had earlier said that the rules require an autopsy to be conducted on anyone who dies in prison.
Earlier this month, a 32-year-old man died while being treated for injuries caused by attempting to hang himself while in police custody.
Adam Athuhar died on September 2 and an autopsy concluded that he died by hanging.
