The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the International Foundation for the Electoral Systems (IFES) held a special stakeholder forum on the rights of people with disabilities with the assistance of USAID.
A total of 70 participants from several government institutions, state-owned enterprises and associations participated in the forum.
Huraa MP Anara Naeem, who sits on the Parliament Committee on Human Rights and Gender, was the chief guest of the forum. She said the Parliament would cooperate to protect the rights of people with disabilities.
"The challenges faced by children with disabilities in accessing education must be addressed," Anara said.
HRCM member Moomina Waheed said that the society should be aware of the situation of people with disabilities and facilitate people with disabilities to participate in society without discrimination.
The objectives of the forum include ensuring that efforts to promote the rights of persons with disabilities are collaborative, identifying challenges in promoting and delivering rights, and promoting the provision of all entitlements to persons with disabilities.
In addition, the participants discussed the possible ways of addressing the challenges faced by people with disabilities and prepared a paper to be submitted to the institutions.
