The President’s Office has filed 75 complaints to the Maldives Media Council (MMC) this year to stop the alleged spread of fake news.
MMC told the Parliament's Independent Institutions Committee on July 31 that the council received the highest number of complaints this year from state agencies.
Adhadhu submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request seeking the number and details of the complaints filed by the President's Office. In response, the President's Office said it had submitted 75 complaints to the MMC as of July.
"The cases referred by this office to the Media Council are connected to those accused of spreading false news and false information," the President's Office said.
The office also noted that their policy is to submit the cases of those who disseminate news to mislead the public or harm the public interest.
The MMC has recently met with a team from the President's Office regarding the 75 cases. The President's Office team was led by Policy Office Under Secretary Mohamed Firzul.
