The government has decided to increase taxes and fees charged from passengers departing from Maldives' airports starting in December
Although this has not yet been announced, the government will increase taxes and fees as part of its plans to increase revenue.
According to information shared by the Finance Ministry with the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, the change will take effect on December 1.
Those departing from airports in Maldives are required to pay Airport Development Fee (ADF) and Departure Tax.
The rates for ADF and Departure Tax are USD 12 for Maldivian passengers and USD 30 for foreigners travelling in economy class, USD 60 for business class passengers, USD 90 for first-class passengers and USD 120 for private jet passengers.
A reliable source said the rate of increase in taxes and fees has not yet been decided and that discussions were still ongoing.
The Finance Ministry's paper presented to the Parliament stated that the government plans to increase these fees without significant impact on Maldivian travellers.
Adhadhu understands that the changes will require Maldivian passengers travelling in classes other than economy class to pay these taxes.
The Finance Ministry estimates that the change will add more than USD 115 million annually to the state's revenue over the next three years.
The Ministry of Finance has estimated that revenue will increase by MVR 1.6 billion in 2025, MVR 1.8 billion in 2026 and MVR 1.9 billion in 2027.
