State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has said that electricity bills in six percent of households in Male' and 15 percent of households in Hulhumale' have increased at an alarming rate.

STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy told a news conference at the company's head office today that six percent of households in Male' and 15 percent of households in Hulhumale' have seen increases in their electricity bills to the extent that customers and STELCO need an explanation.

He said those bills are "extremely" high.

"When you look at Male', there is about six percent bill just extremely high. We need an explanation and I believe the customers will need an explanation about those six percent," Fahmy said.

"In Hulhumale', there is about 15 percent that we and customers need an explanation. The bill is extremely high for about 15 percent."

He said STELCO would technically investigate the reason for the increase. He said STELCO teams will visit households and conduct an energy audit. The household to be audited will be chosen through statistics, he added.

"We have decided to do an energy audit by visiting the apartments to see their condition, what kind of appliances they use, [what kind of] air conditioners and what is the insulation of the apartments, we want to give those customers that information," Fahmy said.

He stated that conducting an energy audit would help customers save electricity and would also make it easier to look at what is causing the electricity bill to rise and take action.

Fahmy reiterated that there was no deception in creating the bills.
