The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has decided to change garbage collection hours to late at night in a bid to ease congestion and traffic flow in Male’ roads.
The government’s decision was announced at a ceremony held on Wednesday night to inaugurate the “Male’ Fahi” programme.
The current garbage collection hours are between 7 pm and 10 pm. The traffic flow in Male’ roads is disrupted during the collection hours, causing difficulties to pedestrians and drivers.
The change is part of measures to be taken to reduce congestion in the Male’ region. The government also decided to restrict the transport of goods on vehicles above a certain size to designated hours.
Some 1.7 kilos of waste per head in Male’ and 800 grams of waste per head in the atolls are generated every day. The disposal of each ton of waste costs MVR 2,400.
