A ministerial delegation currently on an official visit to China briefed senior Chinese government officials yesterday about the fiscal reforms planned by the current administration.

The delegation includes Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, Finance Minister Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq and Construction Minister Dr. Abdul Muththalib.

During the trip, Foreign Minister Zameer met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi yesterday.

Two letters from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to Chinese President Xi Jinping were delivered to the Chinese Foreign Minister during the meeting, the Maldives Foreign Ministry said in a statement about the official talks.

"Minister Zameer also briefed the Chinese Foreign Minister on the economic and fiscal situation in the Maldives, emphasising the importance of carrying out diligently, the fiscal reforms as announced by President Dr. Muizzu," the Foreign Ministry said.

"He further requested China’s support to the Maldives in carrying out the reform programme, which will foster consumer and investor confidence in the Maldivian economy which would then positively impact our economic resilience."

The austerity measures announced by the President last month after the country's finances deteriorated include canceling official functions and reducing the number of political appointees. Several other measures will also be taken, he said.

The government has not revealed further details about the measures. But political appointments continue to be made to various government ministries despite the policy to reduce political posts.
