Electricity was restored in Meemu Muli on Friday after an outage left the entire island without electricity for two days.

The power outage in Muli started on Wednesday morning. It came after periodic electricity cuts in some areas for a few days.

Electricity was restored around 3 am on Friday after a new generator set was installed, Muli council president Shamoon Rameez told Adhadhu.

"Electricity was cut off after two very old gen sets that had been installed and used were overloaded. Then first they tried to repair those two gen sets. When that didn't work, they installed a new gen set that had been here. Installation finished last night," he explained.

Fenaka Corporation provides electricity service to the island.

Fenaka Managing Director Muaz Mohamed Rasheed told Adhadhu that the power cut was caused by a problem with a generator set.

A person who spoke from Muli said that shops had been closed and many people slept outside on mattresses due to the heat.

"Some shop owners slept on mattresses outside the shop door."

Muli has a population of 1,014 people, including 520 men and 492 women. The Meemu atoll hospital is also located in Muli and the island's economy has expanded with the development of an airport.
