Civil society groups have shared their concerns with Male' city Mayor Adam Azim over the delay in giving flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme.
Male' Residents' Association, Giraavaru Male' Citizens Association, Gulhifalhu Citizens' Association, Hulhumale' Community and Fahi Union met the mayor to express concern as the 4,000 flats allocated by the previous government have still not been handed over to the recipients.
Mayor Azim told reporters after the meeting that his biggest pledge was to work to solve the housing issues and assured he would continue to work for that.
"The council members are working very hard to decide on it next Wednesday and send our recommendation to the Ministry of Housing," he said.
Azim said it was important to review the list of flat recipients and make it public. He noted that it is not legally fair to take back something.
He called on the government to hand over the flats to the recipients without delay and to hand over the land for recipients in the Binveriyaa scheme.
Azim also urged the government to implement the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s housing policy.
