The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to fine three political parties that failed to submit audit reports as mandated by law.
The EC said today that it has decided to fine The Democrats, Maldives National Party (MNP) and Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD).
A fine of MVR 50,000 will be imposed on each party with reference to Article 44 of the Political Parties Act. The EC did not provide any further details.
Article 44 of the political parties law states that each political party must submit annual financial records audited by an accredited auditor to the EC and the Auditor General within 90 days from the end of the year.
Of the fined parties, The Democrats presently have 4,364 members on its registry. The MNP has 7,656 members and the MTD has 2,388 members. Both The Democrats and MNP fielded candidates in the first round of last year's presidential election.
