Shamnaz released after 20 days in jail

Former State Minister Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem, who was arrested on charges of witchcraft, has been released after 20 days in jail.

On June 23, police arrested Shamnaz, her sister Hawwa Sana Ali Saleem and the alleged sorcerer, Hussain Sameer from Thaa Kinbidhoo, a former cook at the President's official residence.

Sameer was released on July 1 while Shamnaz and Sana were released yesterday.

Police said they were released as there was no need for the investigation to keep them in custody.

"Police are investigating the matter," they added.

Shamnaz was not allowed to breastfeed her 17-month-old baby during her time in custody.

Meanwhile, the baby's father and Shamnaz's former husband President's Office Minister Adam Rameez has been on suspension since her arrest. The couple divorced in June a few days before the arrest.

Shamnaz has been sacked as the State Minister of the Environment Ministry while her sister Sana has been sacked as senior political director of the Environment Ministry.
