The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has started looking into cases of home owners locking meters and cutting off water supply to tenants despite regular payment of bills.
Complaints have been submitted about water meters locked at the request of home owners despite the payment of bills and home owners locking meters on their own and cutting off the service without the knowledge of the water company, HRCM said.
In some cases, disputes have been resolved through dialogue between the involved parties and relevant authorities, the commission said.
HRCM expressed concern over the adverse impact from cutting off water supply on the residents of a home or household. No rights can be curtailed to any extent except as stated in the Constitution, the commission noted.
The Human Rights Commission appealed for disputes between members or the public or between individuals and agencies to be submitted to the relevant authorities and resolved within legal bounds.
