The number of sexual crimes reported to police over the past six years exceeds 2,000 cases, information gathered by Parliament has shown.
Parliament's Human Rights and Gender Committee compiled statistics on sex crimes after former Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef (now Council Minister) submitted a resolution in 2021 to express concern over the increasing number of sexual assault and rape cases.
A report compiled with information gathered during research prompted by the resolution was presented to the Parliament floor during the final sitting of the 19th People's Majlis on Monday.
According to the report based on information gathered after questioning senior officials of the relevant authorities, the highest number of sexual crimes over the past six years was reported in 2020 with 487 cases.
The fewest crimes were reported last year with 234 cases.

According to the information gathered by Parliament, despite the high number of cases reported to police, the Prosecutor General's office only pressed charges in 47 cases from 2018 to 2023.
Of these cases, the perpetrator was only convicted in 10 cases. Of the cases concluded by the court, the defendant was acquitted in one case. The charges were dismissed in one case and trials are ongoing in the other cases.
