More than 50 people were hired on Friday night for a Road Development Corporation (RDC) office opened in Addu city’s Hithadhoo on the previous day, Adhadhu has learned.
The RDC office opening ceremony was held in Hithadhoo on Thursday. RDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair, company officials and senior government officials took part in the ceremony. Ibrahim Shareef, CEO and managing director of the Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL), was the chief guest.
The hiring of many employees for the office in a short period came without any job announcements in the gazette. RDC’s latest job announcement was gazetted on February 20.
Addu city councillor Ibrahim Shinaz told Adhadhu that the new staff were handed employment notices through the government candidate for the constituency’s parliament seat in Sunday’s polls.
“The office was opened [Thursday] evening. As I’ve learned for certain, more than 50 job chits were given [Friday] night,” he said.
The focus of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) was on Sunday’s election, he said, noting that the hiring of about 70 employees by the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and six managerial staff by the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) under the current government.
“What else is this apart from influencing the election?” Shinaz asked.
RDC was not available for an official comment on the issue but Adhadhu has confirmed the hirings.
Adhadhu has also learned that several state-owned companies gave promotions and hired new employees ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
According to various sources, this included promotions given during the past week for more than 100 employees of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), more than 60 employees of the State Electricity Company (STELCO), nearly 100 employees of Fenaka, and several employees of MACL and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
