Fines accrued on water bills for households charged at the domestic rate amount to MVR 17 million, Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed has said.
After President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided to waive the fines, Matheen told Adhadhu that about 3,000 customers owed unpaid fines on water bills by the end of last year after using water supplies worth MVR 45 million.
The MVR 17 million in fines will be forgiven when MWSC collects the MVR 45 million that it is owed, which would benefit both the company and customers, Matheen said.
"Non-payment of water bills reached MVR 45 million and MVR 17 million was accrued as fines on the bills," Matheen said.
Moreover, customers will be allowed to clear the outstanding bills by making payments in installments, he said. However, the fines could only be waived after the bills are settled, Matheen said.
As President Muizzu announced that fines on electricity bills will also be waived, Fenaka and the State Electricity Company (STELCO) have been working on writing off their fines.
