The number of female judges increased by 3.4 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, the Judicial Service Commission's (JSC) annual report has shown.
The proportion of women judges increased significantly over the past five years due to the JSC's efforts, the report showed.
In her statement in the annual report, JSC President Hisaan Hussain noted that the number of female judges has grown from 11 judges five years ago to 28 judges at present.
In addition, the JSC also organized a symposium for the first time last year to identify and discuss how to address challenges faced by women judges.
"Work started at this symposium on formulating an action plan to minimize challenges faced by female judges, reduce the gap between male and female judges, and solve problems faced in the workplace," Hisaan said.
Considering the rate of increase in the number of women judges, there were 23 judges by the end of 2022, up from 20 in 2021. There were 28 women judges on the bench by the end of 2023.
