The government has decided to start tracking and monitoring sea vessels to prevent drug trafficking.
The decision was taken by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at a meeting of the Cabinet today upon the recommendation of Ministers.
The government will start installing and monitoring "vessel tracking devices" on all types of sea vessels.
The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology submitted the paper on the matter to the Cabinet.
According to the government, the decision was made as drug trafficking is a major issue in the country and to assist the police in carrying out operations.
The government has decided to amend the Safety Regulations to make the device compulsory.
The Cabinet also decided that the Maritime Operations Center of the Police and the Maritime Rescue Coordination of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) would monitor the vessels equipped with the device.
