The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has decided to re-export goods that arrive in the country via sea, MPL Managing Director Mohamed Wajeeh said yesterday.
Speaking at a press conference at the MPL head office, Wajeeh said the re-export of goods that arrive on cargo ships would begin very soon as the government wanted to enter more businesses.
MPL has consulted with Customs and the airport operator and made preparations, he said.
"There are a lot of goods that arrive in the Maldives through Colombo from various countries in the world. They want containers that come to the Maldives to be sent by air to various places in the world," Wajeeh said.
MPL's revenue would grow when re-exporting begins, Wajeeh said. The transactions will be conducted in American dollars, he said.
Talks have taken place with two or three airlines and an agreement has now been reached, Wajeeh said. The next step is launching the re-exporting business, he added.
