Government officials have joined the campaign of Anara Naeem, who is contesting for Parliament as an independent candidate for the Huraa constituency after losing the primary of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

Anara, former MP for Makunudhoo, competed in the PNC primary on January 27 for the Huraa constituency ticket but lost to Abdulla Waris who secured the PNC ticket.

However, photos shared by Anara on social media yesterday showed Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu, President's Office Minister Abdulla Naseer and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Criminal Justice Advisor Muhthaz Muhsin campaigning with her.

The photos prompted widespread criticism of the government on social media as questions were raised about the purpose of the PNC primaries.

In addition to the Huraa constituency, the government has also supported other candidates or independent candidates who are contesting after losing the primary.

Constituencies with confusion over the government candidate include Thimarafushi, Gaaf Alif Villingili, Velidhoo, Mathiveri and Machchangoalhi Medhu. Each of these constituencies has a PNC candidate who won the party's primary.

A person questioned President Muizzu about the uncertainty over government candidates during the 'Ahaa' forum last month.

"As another candidate who does not belong to the party or the government is using the President's photo and telling the public and members that he has the President's full support, there are disagreements and discontent among the people in three islands. What does the President think about this?" a young person asked.

The President was also asked whether candidates elected by the primary would have the government's support. However, the President said it was an internal party matter unrelated to the night's topic and declined to answer.
