The Supreme Court has ordered the temporary suspension of the implementation of the changes brought to Parliament's rules of procedure concerning the impeachment process.
The order was issued as the Supreme Court justices believed that the matters related to the constitutional case submitted by the Attorney General's Office may lose relevance if the implementation of the changes is not suspended.
The order was issued unanimously by the five-justice bench but the opinion of Justice Aisha Shujoon differed. She disagreed with the part that says relevance would be lost. Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim also supported her opinion.
Shujoon made a couple of points including the delay in filing the case.
The Parliament passed the amendments on December 18 last year. The Attorney General filed the case in the Supreme Court on behalf of the government more than a month later, earlier last week.
Based on this, Shujoon argued that the matter was presented in view of the possibility of giving rise to potentially unconstitutional circumstances in the future so there is no reason to take a measure because relevance might be lost.
