The Islamic Ministry has ordered to stop reciting the Qunoot-e-Naazilah for Palestine during the daily five obligatory prayers in all islands across the Maldives.
The Qunoot-e-Naazilah is recited during prayers when the Muslim Community is afflicted with hardship.
In a circular sent to the council and local authorities that oversee mosques, the ministry ordered to halt Qunoot recitation from Maqrib prayer today.
The circular did not state a reason for the decision.
The decision to recite Qunoot was first made on October 11, 2023, following Israel's declaration of war in Gaza.
At first, the Qunoot was only recited during night prayers. But on October 18, 2023, the government ordered it to be recited during all five prayers.
Israel has been bombing Gaza for more than three months. The death toll has risen to over 25,000 out of which more than 12,000 are children.
