The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has temporarily banned the sale of panadol after spotting issues with the drug imported from Sri Lanka.
MFDA said in an announcement that the crushed panadol was discovered among random samples taken under the Post Market Surveillance Plan to ensure the safety and quality of imported medicinal drugs.
"Until further notice, pharmacies and general stores must discontinue the sale of the drug. The import of the drug has been restricted until the investigation is completed," the announcement read.
MFDA has advised shops, pharmacies and warehouses to separate the stocks of panadol and store them under the right conditions and temperatures.
Pills can get crushed because it does not meet the standards during manufacturing or storage, the announcement read.
"There is a high probability that patients will not get the benefit or effect of the drug if it is crushed. This authority is investigating the cause of the problem."
Although MFDA has banned panadol, 11 other brands of paracetamol 500 mg and seven brands of paracetamol 650 mg are allowed.
