China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), which developed the Hiya flats in Hulhumale' phase 2, has proposed to build 15,000 housing units in Rasmale'.
Speaking at a press briefing at the President's Office on Sunday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's Public Policy Secretary Abdulla Nazim said CSCEC has submitted a proposal to the government.
The Economic Council has decided that the Housing Ministry and the Infrastructure Ministry should negotiate on the price and quality of the project, he said.
CSCEC is one of the largest investment and construction companies in the world. The Hiya flats is the first project carried out by the company in the Maldives.
According to an audit report on the Hiya project, five companies submitted proposals and CSCEC's proposal had the highest cost for the project. The project was launched while Muizzu was Housing Minister.
The government's flagship infrastructure project Rasmale' will be developed in Kaafu Fushidhiggaru lagoon. Reclamation of 1,153 hectares of land has already started in the lagoon.
