Keeping tattoos of any shape on any part of the body is forbidden by Islam, the Supreme Council for Fatwa in the Maldives declared in a fatwa issued on Sunday.
The fatwa put out by the Fatwa Council with the ruling on tattoos states that it was reached after research by the council’s members. The study was undertaken in light of the Quran, the Prophet’s sunnah, writings of scholars and reason, it stated.
“Keeping tattoos of any shape on any part of the body is not permissible and forbidden. And because this is changing the form created by Allah and because scholars say that the place with the tattoo is unclean,” the fatwa reads.
Any words or drawings in the shape of birds, animals or humans and other symbols or markings of various kinds on any part of the body are tattoos, the fatwa stated.
