The Health Ministry has launched an investigation into alleged negligence by the Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital in the treatment of a pregnant woman.
Mariyam Saaniya from Raa Vaadhoo was not provided adequate treatment and medication when her condition deteriorated after she was admitted for birthing, her husband alleged. She was later placed on a ventilator and transferred to Malé.
Saaniya passed away after she was brought to Malé. The Health Ministry said it was looking into the case after complaints regarding her death were brought to its attention.
While Saaniya was at the Ungoofaaru hospital, employees assured the husband each time he asked that she was not ready to give birth, he alleged. According to the family, the unborn child died amid repeated pleas to induce birth.
The child died in September. During the month, Saaniya was brought to the Tree Top Hospital for further treatment. Her brain, heart and kidney were not functioning, the hospital said.
Saaniya died while undergoing treatment at Tree Top last Wednesday.
