President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on the international community to build on the United Nations Security Council resolution by urging an immediate ceasefire in Palestine.

Stating that the UN Security Council resolution adopted on Friday was a step in the right direction, Muizzu said the international community must take stronger and more concrete steps to immediately end all hostilities.

“But let us be clear, aid cannot be safely delivered in the middle of airstrikes. The people of Palestine continue to face brutal attacks," Muizzu stated.

He further stated that the Maldives expected prompt implementation of the resolution and called to guarantee the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination.

The resolution, which also calls for a complete cessation of hostilities, was passed with the support of 13 of the 15 Security Council members. The world's two largest powers, the United States and Russia did not participate in the vote.

More than 20,000 of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been killed and 90 percent of the total population displaced in Israeli attacks targeting civilians.
