Parliament has asked the Defense Ministry to provide security for Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after he faced death threats.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Parliament Secretariat condemned the death threats in the harshest terms. The incident has been reported to the police, it noted.
The police confirmed that an investigation was underway.
Shifau confirmed it to Adhadhu on Monday night. The death threats came amid public disapproval of Shifau for declaring at a Parliament sitting that he would propose the impeachment of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
"And we have asked the Defense Ministry to ensure the safety and protection of the MP," Parliament said in its statement.
The opposition MDP also called for action to be taken after an investigation.
"The Maldivian Democratic Party calls on the security services to ensure security for all Members of Parliament," the party said in a statement.
The main duty of an opposition political party was holding the government accountable, the MDP said in the statement, expressing concern with "death threats being made and MPs becoming the target of such inhumane crimes for performing that constitutional responsibility."
