Websites that provide pornographic content have been blocked in the Maldives.
Three companies provide internet services in the country. Customers using the services of these companies are not allowed to access certain websites upon notification by the Communications Authority of Maldives.
Neither the telecommunications companies nor the government have officially commented on the blocking of pornographic websites.
Children's rights groups such as ARC, educationists and religious leaders have previously expressed concern over the country's unfettered access to pornographic websites.
The Parliament earlier debated on the issue but no action was taken. During former President Abdulla Yameen's government, the then Prosecutor General ordered the Home Ministry to block access to pornographic websites. However, it was not implemented at the time.
In addition to Maldives, some developed countries also block access to porn websites.
