A foreigner detained for trial in a drug case has died in custody.
Peter Tomas Das, a 59-year-old Swiss national, died at the Maafushi jail on Tuesday evening. He passed away of heart failure, Corrections said, citing a doctor at the Maafushi medical center.
“When Peter suddenly fainted and fell in his cell, he was immediately taken to the Maafushi medical center and given CPR. As he did not resume breathing despite being taken to the Maafushi medical center and examined, the doctor pronounced him dead of heart failure at 4:01,” Corrections said.
He had been detained on charges of drug smuggling, Corrections said.
Tomas’s family was immediately informed of his death, according to Corrections, which also notified the police, Human Rights Commission and National Integrity Commission.
