Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shukoor has been nominated for the Male' city's mayoral candidacy of the ruling People's National Congress-Progressive Party of Maldives (PNC-PPM).
She won the nomination as no other candidate wished to run for the post.
Former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed had earlier announced that he would contest the coalition's mayoral primary.
However, following former President Abdulla Yameen's decision to leave the coalition to form the People's National Front (PNF), Hussain decided to contest for the PNF candidacy.
Azima first announced her candidacy for the mayoral post in a post on X on November 1.
She said her decision came out of the desire to continue serving the people. She claimed to have been serving the public since the age of 17.
"I can assure you that I will continue to serve diligently day and night, work honestly and faithfully, and will always put the interests of the country first," the former President's Office Minister said.
Azima supported Maldives National Party (MNP) candidate Mohamed Nazim in the first round of the presidential election. She backed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the second round.
The Male' city mayor post became vacant following Muizzu's election victory. He assumed office as the president on November 17.
Besides Hussain Waheed and Azima, former Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director Adam Azim is contesting for the post on the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket.
