Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The post became vacant following the resignation of Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla on Sunday morning.
Saleem was elected to the post with 51 votes. His opponent, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, got 23 votes.
Saleem thanked all the members of the MDP parliamentary group in the sitting held last night.
The vote showed that the MDP is a democratic party and everyone can make progress within the party, he said.
MDP has won back control of the Parliament following the change in the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The party had a supermajority in the 19th Session. Mahchangolhi Mid MP Mohamed Nasheed was the former Speaker and Eva was his Deputy.
But the two MPs left the MDP to join the Democrats. MDP tried to move a no-confidence motion against the two and finally succeeded shortly before the change of government.
