Former President Mohamed Nasheed, MP for the Machchangoalhi Medhu constituency, has revealed that he will not contest in next year’s parliamentary elections.

Nasheed shared plans for the future of his political career in a message sent to a WhatsApp group with MPs.

“I will not contest in the next election. I have a lot of other work. But I will mostly be in the Maldives,” he said.

Nasheed was elected to the 19th Parliament on a ticket of the formerly ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and was elected as Speaker by the party’s super-majority.

Amid disputes within the party, Nasheed left the MDP and formed a new party called The Democrats. He is the party’s most senior leader despite not holding any leadership position.

After the MDP lost power, the party filed a no-confidence motion against Nasheed. He resigned as Speaker before the motion was put to a vote.
