A trade agreement was signed between the Maldives and Türkiye during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to the country on his first overseas trip since assuming office.
The "Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of Türkiye" was signed during President Muizzu's meeting with Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday evening.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives government whilst Professor Ömer Bolat signed on behalf of the Türkiye government, according to the President's Office.
President Muizzu met President Erdoğan yesterday. During the meeting at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, both leaders discussed areas for cooperation and agreed upon a roadmap for further strengthening the close ties between the countries, the President's Office said.
Both Muizzu and Erdoğan condemned Israel’s war on Palestine in the strongest terms and expressed hope that the war would end. A permanent solution for peace in Palestine could only be attained through the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, the two presidents noted.
Both leaders also agreed that Israel should immediately end the occupation of Palestine and return illegally seized Palestinian land, according to the President's Office.
Muizzu is accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a delegation of senior government officials during the ongoing official visit to Türkiye.
After concluding the visit, the President is due to travel to UAE to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference - COP 28 on November 30 before returning to the Maldives.
